SINGER'S CIRCLE

What if seeing the suffering of others made your own life intolerable? For Peter Singer, it's a lonely road but the only one his heart will allow.
Things are going well for Pete Singer – he’ s happily married with two healthy sons and a job that more than pays the bills – until he receives the first email. It is a list of 247 names. Just the list – no salutation, no signature, no explanation. When Singer receives the second email, he cannot resist tapping the link at the top of the page. It shows a young girl unconscious, malnourished and laying on a rough dirt floor. It ends with a disembodied voice – “ Peter, twenty-five dollars will save her life.” At first, he follows the advice of friends and family and resists the plea. However, he soon receives a second video of the same young girl struggling to take a breath – her last. He begins to donate. But he can’ t stop – even when it means lying to his wife and putting his family’ s financial future in jeopardy. Eventually, the financial sacrifices that Singer is willing to make on behalf of strangers strays so far from social acceptability that he loses his friends, his job, his marriage, and his family. On a day that feels as if it may be among his last, he meets the architect of the mission that he has been supporting. She shows him the way to a life he had never imagined. |

Singer's Circle is the story of a man trying to do the right thing in a world that has lost its way. It's a psychological drama at approximately 100,000 words and asks the question - how much would you sacrifice to save a life? Peter Singer would sacrifice everything.
This book is about obsession and the societal ties that bind - it wears its heart on a ragged sleeve. I imagine that Singer would be happy waiting for a bus with any of the characters from a Willy Vlautin novel. Singer’s Circle by Jeff Houlahan is a psychologically intense moral thriller that explores the limits of empathy, manipulation, and personal sacrifice. The story follows Pete Singer, a man whose ordinary life is disrupted by a series of disturbing messages that draw him into an escalating cycle of compelled donations tied to the life of an unknown child.
Houlahan constructs a slow burning descent into obsession, where ethical certainty erodes under emotional pressure and technological immediacy. As Pete continues to respond to increasingly harrowing appeals, the consequences ripple outward, affecting his marriage, career, and sense of identity. The novel is most effective in its exploration of coercion and moral fatigue, raising unsettling questions about how far compassion can be pushed before it becomes destructive. The introduction of the mysterious architect behind the campaign adds a chilling layer of control and ideological manipulation. This book will appeal to readers who enjoy psychological suspense with ethical dilemmas and dark, thought provoking narratives. - Graeme Williams (Goodreads) |
A very thought provoking story about how far someone will go to help others. Great story.
